THE MAKING OF CARPETS
The woman make them at home and do as much or as little as they want. We have an office and employ staff to buy the cotton and rice bags, sort the colours, distribute the material and pay the participants when they collect the finished products. The women who work consistently at it and are proficient take ½ a day to cut and roll the cotton for one 70cm diameter round mat and one full day to hook it through. The carpets are made of:
- Post production t-shirt cotton purchased or donated from the garment factories in Cambodia
- Hessian/Jute sacks (used rice bags) purchased from local communities
- Cotton thread

- Latex backing (pure latex mixed with calcium carbonate)
The carpets can be cleaned primarily through beating and vacuuming but smaller mats can be put in the washing machine.
